PewDiePie ending the meme

PewDiePie Ends the “Subscribe to PewDiePie” Meme

On April 28, 2019, PewDiePie uploaded a video called Ending the Subscribe to Pewdiepie meme. In the video, he explains why, although this meme had a great positive impact on the community, it is highly necessary to stop the meme.

At first it started off with people doing really positive and fun things to get attention through “Subscribe to Pewdiepie”. But something I learned, and I think hopefully something people can understand, is when you have 90 million people riled up about something, you’re bound to get a few degenerates.

PewDiePie then mentions the indecent where someone had spray painted the phrase onto a World War 2 memorial.

Its so disgusting, so disappointing to have my name and community dragged into that… But then something happened that I don’t think anyone could have predicted – The Christchurch shooter said “Subscribe to Pewdiepie” (…) I didn’t want to give the terrorist any more attention, I didn’t want to make it about me… It’s clear to me now that the Subscribe to Pewdiepie movement should have ended then.

PewDiePie finishes with talking about how Media has made the phrase about race and politics, even though it never has been and never will be. He also explains how he doesn’t want the race to 100 million to be about beating another channel, because, as he claims, “what we have accomplished is so much more than that“.

As for International PewDiePie Day, the celebrations will continue as planned despite the several thousand dollar banner having “Subscribe to PewDiePie” on it. Because the phrase, and Felix’s name, have been dragged through the worst of dirt, PewDiePie reminds his fans to have integrity.

Do the right thing for the right reasons. Always have integrity, no matter the reasons.

Many of PewDiePie’s fans are deeply saddened that this celebration of fun and positivity was turned into one of hate by a select few bad people and organizations. However, deep down we all know that Felix made the right move when he chose to end the meme.

  1. It was an honor to fight. Now we stand at the end of one of the most historic subscriber wars in the history of the internet. At ease, my fellow 9 year olds. At ease.

  2. It’s been an honor serving with you all, but as with everything, it must come to and end. It’s certainly sad to see all the hatred and the frankly inappropriate behavior surrounding our little crusade, but these things sometimes just happen. Now we must band together not to tell people to sub to pewds, but to share his message and spread joy and positivity throughout the world. Shadily lads, I’ll catch you on the flipside
